News Updates...The August 17 Rome Sentinel article, Smooth running as two-county landfill ends ‘peak season’ by Dan Guzewich paints an unrealistic picture of the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (OHSWA) regional landfill as a “Neverland”, where garbage doesn’t stink, only a “handful” of trucks travel the roadways, and it’s okay to shoot birds because the landfill only “welcomes trash”.
Despite the fact Mr. Guzewich received an email response to his phone calls from Adirondack Communities Advisory League (ACAL) two days BEFORE he wrote his landfill fairy tale, surprisingly, he indicated that repeated calls “drew no response.” Hmm.
Contrary to the landfill myth contrived in Smooth running, Northern Oneida county citizens are extremely upset by the landfill. The potential danger of increased truck traffic on rural roadways, often traveling at high speed, has local residents, parents and school board officials concerned for the safety of Adirondack Central School children. This is a well-known fact that has been discussed at length with OHSWA. According to the Sentinel’s report on August 17 by Dave Gymburch, other area schools are also concerned for the safety of their children. Town of Lee officials have agreed to propose a decrease in speed limit past Stokes Elementary School from 55 mph to 25 mph because garbage trucks traveling to the landfill in Ava could pose “a dangerous situation.”
ACAL is a grassroots environmental organization that was initially formed to stop the siting and construction of the OHSWA landfill, which was forced into the Town of Ava because it was “the least populous town in Oneida County” with no political or financial resources to stop it. ACAL is now working to protect the Black River Watershed and to preserve the natural resources in the Tug Hill Region. Had Mr. Guzewich contacted local municipalities and residents, or asked to see the complaints filed with OHSWA, he may have learned the truth about the effects of the landfill, instead of creating a paint-by-numbers picture worth about fifty cents.
Fair and straightforward journalism is what citizens deserve and should demand from local media. Anything short of the truth is rubbish.
