News Updates...ACAL News – Week of 10 August 2007“In 2005, the Association for Childhood Education International reported the amount of time U.S. children now spend outdoors has declined by 50 percent over previous generations.” This startling fact was published in the NWF View section of the National Wildlife Federation August/September 2007 issue of its magazine, written by NFW President and Chief Executive Officer Larry J. Schweiger. Mr. Schweiger wrote a compelling piece expressing “that an important connection between outdoors and caring for nature is being broken.” According to a report by Cornell University researchers, “Children who fish, camp and spend time in the wild before age 11 are much more likely to grow up to be environmentally committed as adults.” Research indicates that kids today are spending six or more hours each day in front of a television or computer screen. According to a NWF poll, outdoor enthusiasts appear to be more connected and concerned about environmental issues than the general public. With current issues demanding public action and attention on global warming, conservation practices, and the preservation of natural resources, it’s time for folks to get more fresh air and sunshine. I am most fortunate because I was raised to not only appreciate the outdoors, but to respect it as well. When I was 10, my brother and I, and a handful of neighborhood kids earned money for new bicycles and school clothes every summer by picking berries for a local farmer. Frank would pull into the driveway in his old pick-up truck around 6:30AM and collect up the kids and drive us to the berry fields. Frank was a meticulous farmer and his acres of berry fields were picture perfect. We were taught how to correctly pick the berries, careful not to pull the plants out of the ground or damage the fruit, and to fill up the quart and pint containers so customers would appreciate the few extras on top. And the best part was we could eat as many as we wanted for free – fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. What a treat! My brother and I were also involved in scouting for many years and went camping, hiking, and skiing with our troops on a regular basis. I learned at a young age how to build a fire and to put one out safely to prevent forest fires. We cooked, ate and slept outdoors and learned to respect the land and its habitants. Thirty-some years laters, I love to garden, mow the lawn, plow the driveway, hike in the Adirondack and Green Mountains, and take our black Lab, Harry, for a walk. Although a large portion of my work requires I do a lot of reading, writing and computer use, I often take my laptop outdoors on the porch and pile my research around me, carefully weighting down the papers to keep them from blowing away. As a parent, I was fortunate to have home schooled my son. To this day, if you were to ask him what “executive decision” means, he will smile and give examples of how a typical “school day” would become an adventure, usually involving a drive, a hike and outdoor exploration. As an educator, I have been blessed with the ability to recognize and understand that learning takes place in all environments, not just within the walls of a classroom. Although we had a home computer while our children were growing up, video and hand-held games were not allowed until the kids were grown and out of school. The kids didn’t complain much because what they didn’t know, they didn’t miss. As a result, they developed an appreciation for the outdoors and for nature. Now in their twenties, they may not be the level of conservationist as their mother, but they don’t litter, they do recycle, and they continue to appreciate the outdoors. Mr. Schweiger encourages folks to “make memories in nature with children.” “What will become of wild places, if children know little of the mystery, the grace, the interconnectedness of all living things?
