Roosevelt The June 4 Issue of Newsweek covered a story entitled “Troubled Waters -Drought, pollution, mismanagement and politics have made water a precious commodity in much of the world.” According to the article, “more than one billion people worldwide lack clean water. Rivers in Africa and Asia are drying up after decades of mismanagement and climate change.” China’s Yangtze River, the third longest in the world, is so polluted that even after a $5 million clean-up in 2002, “the river is so burdened with agricultural and industrial waste that by 2011 it may be unable to sustain marine life, much less human life. An April report by the World Wildlife Fund and two Chinese agencies found that damage to the river’s ecosystem is largely irreversible.” “Almost 400 million Chinese, fully a third of the country’s population, still have no access to water that is clean enough for regular use.” Small villages, scattered throughout the country, have been nicknamed “cancer villages” due to the polluted waters many are forced to use drink and use for crops. In India, agriculture and industry have taken from the already diminished water supply. “Factories have drawn too heavily on both the rivers and groundwater … a Coca-Cola plant had to be shut down because it had taken so much groundwater that villagers nearby were left with almost none.” Indian farmers have resorted to boring into the ground, sometimes over 600 feet, just to find ample water for their crops. According to studies completed in India, the water table drops 6-10 feet each year. In the West Bank, where Palestinians and Israelis have been fighting over water for decades, the groundwater continues to drop, affecting nearly 3 million people with a severe water shortage. Problems with water are not exclusively found in other countries. An article from the same June 4 Newsweek entitled, “River of Doubt – Minute quantities of everyday contaminants in our drinking supply could add up to big trouble”, described an alarming find by scientists in Colorado. The common white sucker, a bottom feeder scientists call a sentinel, is a breed of fish “whose health (or lack thereof) can warn us about problems in the environment.” It appears that upstream, “where the water flows pure and clear out of the Rocky Mountains, the ratio of males to females is 50-50, just as nature intended. Downstream, below the wastewater-treatment plant in Boulder, Colorado, the females out number the males 5:1” while approximately 10 percent of the fish population could not be classified as male or female, because they had characteristics of both. Scientists believe “emerging contaminants” found in certain cosmetics, shampoos, shaving lotions, skin cream, dishwashing liquids, pesticides, flame-retardants, plastics, and anti-bacterial soaps cause the greatest concern. These specific contaminants or “endocrine disrupters” are “chemicals in the environment that mimic hormones when they get into the body.” Although minute amounts of these chemical compounds are being found in American water sources, scientists are still not sure what would happen when a person is exposed to different chemicals at once. The article suggests a few “common-sense measures” that people can take to keep chemicals out of our water supplies and protect the fish population. 1. Look for phthalate-free deodorants and body lotions. 2. Stop using anti-bacterial soap. (Many studies have indicated that using regular soap is just as effective.) 3. Dispose of drugs properly. Most should NOT be flushed. Contact your local municipality to see if they will dispose of them with hazardous waste. Drugs finding their way into landfills could be consumed and lethal to birds and other wild animals. 4. Bottled water is NOT the solution. (Some if it is actually tap water!) The article suggests putting a filter, distiller or purifier that uses reverse osmosis on your tap at home to eliminate chemicals in the water.
