| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

Ms. LeBarron states the DEC's response must be "somewhat restrained" since ACAL has filed a notice of intent to file a citizen's suit against OHSWA.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

ACAL News – Week of 15 June 2007
Adirondack Communities Advisory League (ACAL) Director of Research Kathy Crofoot and I attended a meeting held by the Northern Forest Alliance (NFA) on June 13, 2007 at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center in New Hampshire. The meeting covered various topics encompassing the NFA mission, to protect and enhance the ecological and economic sustainability of natural and human communities in the Northern Forest, including new membership and the 2007 Farm Bill.
I am pleased to announce that ACAL has been granted membership into the NFA, which consists of a network of organizations spanning the northeast region of the United States, including Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, and New York. Kathy and I were invited to speak about ACAL goals and its mission. We found NFA representatives to be highly educated, energized, and effective advocates for the environment.
ACAL has a promising future. The grassroots group originally formed to stop the siting and construction of the controversial and politically motivated landfill located in the Town of Ava, has recently restructured and redefined its goals. During the restructuring process, ACAL realized that its work would be more effective if it could join forces with other environmental organizations that share similar missions. In striving to meet its 2007 short-term goals, ACAL has partnered with Great Lakes United, the Clean Water Network, and the Northern Forest Alliance.
Presently, ACAL is the only grassroots environmental group that exists in the Tug Hill Plateau, a region that has been overlooked economically for decades, but one that is rich in beauty, natural resources and wildlife. Within the past several years, state government has begun to take an interest in developing Upstate New York. Although small businesses and farmers will likely welcome the financial opportunities associated with growth and expansion, it is crucial that all development be in accordance with the unique and valuable resources and wildlife found throughout the Tug Hill Region.
Wind farms and ATV/snowmobile recreation must not be the major focus for economic sustainability in the Tug Hill Region, but a balance between human recreation, alternate energy sources, farming, wildlife, and natural resource preservation must all be considered when developing a strategic plan for Tug Hill in the future. Rapid economic and recreational growth at the expense of upstate farmers, woodland owners, wildlife, and natural resources is not an option.
Farmland and forests located within the Tug Hill Plateau are home to wildlife, birds, and fish, as well as natural and sustainable resources, including timber, crops, rivers, streams, ponds and wetlands. Through research, analysis, implementation of environmental impact studies, and the involvement of local communities, it is possible to improve the economy of the Tug Hill Region, while preserving and protecting all that is indigenous to the area.
