| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

News Updates...ACAL News – Week of 1 June 2007
When I read Adirondack Central School Board President Carol Potter’s May 9 Letter to the Editor in the Boonville Herald, I wanted to stand up and applaud.
Ms. Potter said it perfectly: “The trash board is not a money tree for our picking. These people assured the (School) Board they were concerned about our students’ safety and promised cooperation in scheduling trucks around our bus schedule. This, we now know, was an idle promise and there’s no reason to think the situation will improve. As I said, I do not believe these are honorable people.”
Between August 28 and September 1, 2000, Adirondack Communities Advisory League (ACAL) attended the issues conference concerning the multitude of problems regarding the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority’s (OHSWA) proposed landfill in the Town of Ava. Fourteen issues were placed on the table before New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Judge Edward Buhrmaster to be adjudicated including: siting methodology, need, wetland impact, air quality, threatened bird species, Veterans’ Memorial Forest, visual impact, truck traffic, site access, property values, controls against animals, and environmental justice.
ACAL’s current Chairman Ian Klingbail gave an informative presentation and spoke at length regarding the serious traffic issues garbage trucks would bring to the area. Yet, for whatever reason, the facts Ian presented were ignored by the DEC. Judge Buhrmaster dismissed 10 of the 14 issues, including truck traffic and the Veterans’ Memorial Forest, which he deemed irrelevant. The remaining 4 issues concerning wetlands, birds, need and hydrogeology were appealed by OHSWA, who deemed all 14 issues irrelevant.
I continue to be appalled by tractor trailers of garbage being allowed by the State of New York to travel right through the middle of Boonville Village, passing a host of small businesses, historic buildings and two schools. I am also concerned about the trucks that travel up Route 26 through the small hamlet of West Leyden and turning at a dangerous intersection on their return trip from the landfill. Route 294 is a country road at best, certainly not adequate to handle tractor trailers going back and forth to the landfill, with its blind spots and dangerous curves.
I agree with Carol Potter 100%. What OHSWA says and what OHSWA does are two different stories. It is quite obviously they do not care for the safety and welfare of Adirondack Central School children, nor the hundreds of residents that travel local roads on a daily basis.
Ms. Potter also eluded in her letter that local residents need to become proactive in solving community problems, instead of simply complaining about them. Expressing an opinion is one thing, but being a part of the solution is what community action is all about.
Newspaper publisher Charles Edward Marsh said, “The people who are most affected by a problem should be involved in creating and implementing solutions to address it.”
Be a solution.
That’s what ACAL did nearly fourteen years ago when it was created to preserve and protect the environment in the Tug Hill Region. ACAL may have not won the political war to stop the landfill, but it has certainly won battles that continue to make a difference in the community.
