News Updates...ACAL News – Week of 27 April 2007Completely by coincidence, I watched “An Inconvenient Truth” last weekend, while the Boonville community was celebrating Earth Day. The 96-minute award-winning 2006 documentary by former Vice President Al Gore has received a lot of attention and rightly so. Global warming is a very serious and scary problem; one that requires every human being to take action NOW before we cause the earth any more irreparable damage. According to “An Inconvenient Truth”, the carbon dioxide (CO2) level within the earth’s atmosphere was first measured in 1958. In nearly 50 years, the atmosphere has thickened from excessive pollution occurring all over the planet. As a result, the heat from the sun’s rays is being trapped within the atmosphere. As pollution and CO2 levels increase, the temperature on earth will continue to increase as well. A perfect example of how global warming is affecting “our little corner of the world” is clearly documented in the Jackson Hill Weather records. Having organized and reviewed these records several years ago, there has been a significant decrease in the total annual snowfall amounts over the past 50 years. I can recall amounts from the 1960’s and 70’s that totaled over 300 inches in one year alone! How many of us have said, “The weather is not the same as when we were kids.” There is a reason for that. It’s called global warming. Carbon dioxide and temperature increases are occurring all over the world. The glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (Africa) are melting. It is projected that in 10 years there will be no more glaciers on Kilimanjaro. In 15 years, the glaciers in Montana’s Glacier National Park will be gone. The world’s largest mountain range, the Himilayas, provides 40% of the world’s population with drinking water from snowmelt. When the glaciers and snow are gone, millions of people from five countries will have a shortage of drinking water. My purpose in writing about global warming is not to bum people out, but to empower folks to take action. The following is the list of ACTIONS contained at the end of “An Inconvenient Truth”. Please read the list thoroughly and select the items you can do TODAY that will help improve the environment and stop global warming from getting any worse. 1. Visit www.climatecrisis.net to learn more about “An Inconvenient Truth” 2. Reduce your carbon emissions by buying energy efficient (Energy Star) appliances and light bulbs 3. Use a timed thermostat in your home to reduce energy for heating and cooling 4. Weatherize your home and increase insulation 5. Recycle 6. Buy a hybrid vehicle or walk or ride a bicycle 7. Use light rail or mass transit 8. Switch to renewable or “alternative” sources of energy (wind, water, solar); call your power company to see if they offer green energy – if they don’t, ask them why not (National Grid, formerly Niagara Mohawk offers green energy options in New York State) 9. Vote for leaders who pledge to solve the global warming crisis 10. Write to Congress – if they don’t listen, run for Congress 11. Plant trees, lots of trees 12. Speak up in your community – call radio shows and write newspapers – insist that America freezes CO2 emissions and joins international efforts to stop global warming 13. Reduce our dependence on foreign oil; help farmers grow alcohol fuels 14. Raise fuel economy standards – require lower emissions from vehicles (The following vehicles are the “greener choices” for 2007 from www.greenercars.com: Toyota – Prius, Yaris, Highlander Hybrid, Tacoma, Sienna; Honda – Civic Hybrid, Fit; Ford – Escape Hybrid, Focus Wagon; Hyundai – Sonata; Mazda – MX-5 Miata; GMC – Sierra Classic C1500.) 15. If you believe in prayer, pray that people will find the strength to change In the words of the old African proverb – “When you pray, move your feet.” 16. Encourage everyone you know to see “An Inconvenient Truth” 17. Learn as much as you can about the climate crisis – then put your knowledge into action … like I just did.
