Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

ACAL News – Week of 6 April 2007

One of Adirondack Communities Advisory League (ACAL)’s main goals in 2007 is to build relationships with environmental organizations that share similar mission statements.

Several months ago, ACAL joined Great Lakes United, www.glu.org, an international coalition of concerned citizens and organizations founded to protect and restore the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River basin through policy initiatives, education and local efforts.

Here are some facts about the Great Lakes you may not know (information provided by Great Lakes United):

• The Great Lakes are the world’s largest and only source of fresh surface water, and represents about one-fifth the world’s total supply.

• Nearly 40 million people from the United States and Canada get their water from the Great Lakes basin.

• Less than 1% of the water within the Great Lakes is renewed each year, leaving it vulnerable to pollution and over-consumption.

Great Lakes United has a number of programs that seek to accomplish important goals including: protecting and restoring diverse native plant and animal habitat, the elimination of toxic substances from entering Great Lakes waterways, work to phase out all nuclear power plants surrounding the Great Lakes, and to promote policies and conservation practices that conserve water.

ACAL joined Great Lakes United because Moose Creek, which closely borders the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority’s 1,039-acre landfill in Ava, is a trout-spawning tributary of the Lake Ontario watershed. Any future pollution that enters Moose Creek, will eventually find its way to Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River basin via the Black River.
ACAL is an excellent environmental resource for citizens and local government. ACAL leadership and members consist of educated volunteers who believe in justice, citizens’ rights and the preservation of the area’s natural resources.

Several weeks ago, the Boonville village board approved OHSWA’s “community compensation package” with a few changes. Much to the relief of ACAL and local residents, the village board omitted Item #20, however the majority of the “proposal” was accepted “as is” and still poses problems for the Boonville community.

It is essential for local officials and citizens to understand the ramifications associated with making deals with a landfill owner. Forfeiting citizens’ rights and placing families in situations that jeopardize their health, welfare and safety is not information that ACAL is making up to scare people. It is 100% FACT - supported by books, articles, and stories from other “landfill communities” that accepted community compensation packages and as a result, can no longer protect themselves from landfill pollution, expansion, truck traffic, and health-related issues.

Boonville Town and Village must not sign a contract with OHSWA to pollute its own environment with local garbage when the issue of flow control has not yet been decided in Supreme Court. What Boonville may not know is that while ACAL and local residents were working to stop the politically fueled landfill from being constructed in Ava, OHSWA was attending town board meetings in New Hartford, Marcy and other townships, encouraging local officials to sign garbage contracts with them and to endorse their landfill in Ava! Boonville must not become one of the Oneida County municipalities to sign a garbage contract with OHSWA. To do so would be a disgrace and a total disregard for its citizens. Boonville Town and Village must do what is best for the people – its greatest resource.
