| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

| 06/08/06 | ACAL vs. OHSWA | ACAL filed a lawsuit against OHSWA for polluting the trout spawing stream of Moose Creek for over a year. The ongoing pollution to the creek violates State environmental law and the Clean Water Act.

| 04/20/06 | Letter to Ava from OHSWA | Lengthy letter from OHSWA Executive Director Hans Arnold to the Ava Town Board regarding a "host community benefit package". The Ava board refuses to negotiate with OHSWA for a 1000+/- acre landfill that is being forced into their rural community.

| 03/31/06 | DEC response to Ava | DEC Region 6 Director Sandra LeBarron's letter to Town of Ava regarding Ava's request to rescind the March 2006 DEC Consent Order and take "appropriate enforcement action". Ms. LeBarron states the DEC's response must be "somewhat restrained" since ACAL has filed a notice of intent to file a citizen's suit against OHSWA.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

ACAL News – Week of 2 March 2007
A long time ago, I once read that when you make the right decision, all will rejoice.
As one of the leaders of Adirondack Communities Advisory League (ACAL), my responsibilities include, in conjunction with the Board of Directors, making the “right” decisions for a group of people I admire, respect and care about very much – the members of ACAL. But ACAL’s decisions are also decisions made for the benefit of the community. Since ACAL’s mission is to preserve and protect the environment, ACAL’s decisions must always reflect those which are “right” for the water, land, air and wildlife in the region.
I believe in order to be an effective leader, one must lead by empowering others. That’s why belonging to a grassroots organization has been so rewarding for me. I have had the opportunity to witness citizens stepping up to plate and batting for their community and their environment. Teachers, carpenters, professionals, clerks, auto mechanics, business owners, stay-at-home moms, farmers, students, clergy, veterans, health care professionals, town officials, laborers, government employees, heavy equipment operators, senior citizens … all of these wonderful people make grassroots organizations viable and effective. And all of these outstanding individuals make up ACAL.
Through the years, ACAL has been called “the anti-landfill group”. Although not incorrect, ACAL’s work has always included much more than trying to keep a landfill from being sited and constructed in an unsuitable location in Upstate New York. Despite OHSWA’s false claims the landfill in Ava is a NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) issue, what they fail to admit is how harmful their landfill has already been on the environment, let alone, what will likely happen in the future.
I have been writing ACAL News for almost 3 years. During that time, I have reported, to the best of my ability, the facts associated with the construction of the landfill and how OHSWA showed little concern or accountability for the land they stripped, the wetlands they destroyed, the wildlife they disturbed, and the creek they abused. In clear terms, ACAL filed a Clean Water Act citizens’ suit against OHSWA to hold them accountable for allowing excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek.
Rest assured, citizens of the North Country, you did not choose to have a landfill and its consequences forced into your communities by a state-appointed public authority. But you can choose to keep you and your families safe from pollution by standing with and supporting ACAL. Together, we can make the right decisions to protect our precious resources. ACAL thanks you in advance for your support.
