| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

News Updates...ACAL News – Week 5 January 2007
Adirondack Communities Advisory League (ACAL) has a mission to preserve and protect the environment in the Northern Oneida and Southern Lewis County Region of the Tug Hill Plateau. In addition, ACAL’s mission also includes the following: “to stimulate, encourage and educate the public on the use of conservation practices in that region.”
As a new year begins, I would like to incorporate information, suggestions and ideas into ACAL News regarding “conservation practices”, better known today as sustainability – conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources. It is my hope the public will begin to think about sustainability, and then make personal decisions that will help protect our natural resources now and in the future.
The State of Texas has reduced roadside trash by 33% since 2001 through their “Don’t Mess With Texas” litter prevention campaign sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Texas residents are not only encouraged not to litter, but to also report people who do litter, which can be done on their website, www.dontmesswithtexas.org. All identified “litterers” (with help from the Department of Motor Vehicles) receive a letter from the TxDOT and a Don’t Mess With Texas litterbag reminding them to put trash where it belongs.
In Australia, a state government is currently sponsoring an anti-litter campaign and has increased their efforts to protect the environment. Their slogan, “Don’t be a tosser” and Our Environment – its’ a living thing, www.livingthing.net.au, “is an initiative of the New South Wales Government to support partnerships with local government, community organizations, businesses and individuals across the state.”
Many of you may remember the Keep America Beautiful slogan that has been used in our country since 1953. According to their website www.kab.org, the Keep America Beautiful mission is “to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments.” Working with communities, Keep America Beautiful focuses on litter prevention, beautification and community improvement, and waste reduction.
How can one person make a difference in the environment? Start by refusing to litter. Carry a bag in the car for snacks and meal containers, then dispose of it properly. If you see people littering, ask them to please stop. They may tell you to buzz off, but I can guarantee they will think twice before they do it again. It’s okay to pick up someone else’s trash. It simply means that you are a mature, responsible person who cares for the environment.
There is a wonderful stretch of the Batten Kill River in Washington County that is a favorite spot for residents to fish, paddle, swim, and picnic. Adjacent to this area is land owned by a local farmer who graciously allows people to park in his field. Near the river is a sign. Although I can’t recall the exact words, the meaning is clear – if you want to enjoy this nice area on the Batten Kill, then don’t litter. I’m sure I am not the only person who walks around looking for trash every time I bring our black Lab, Harry, for a swim. I may not be happy about picking up other people’s litter, but it’s worth the effort to keep the place clean. Besides, Harry would never forgive me if I allowed his favorite swimming hole to become trashed!
Every roadway, driveway, tree, river, lake, and stream belongs to someone or some thing. Whether a private residence, a habitat, or a shared resource like a river, stream, park, or forest, all places in our environment need to cared for and respected as if they were our homes.
“DO NOT LITTER” applies to everyone, including the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority and all the garbage trucks running to and from Ava. Should any resident see garbage blowing off a truck, call 911 immediately and report the incident. Note the name of the truck company and try to get the license plate number. If you are an Ava resident, Oneida County Legislator Pam Mandryck wants to hear from you personally regarding any truck-related issue. Village of Boonville residents are encouraged to call the local police department immediately if you see garbage blowing off trucks in town. Residents have a right to request that officers regularly patrol Main and Ford Streets to keep the village and school zones safe and litter free.
Choosing not to litter and to act responsibly will not only help improve the quality of the community environment, but it will set a positive example for future generations. Thank you for doing your part.
