| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

Ms. LeBarron states the DEC's response must be "somewhat restrained" since ACAL has filed a notice of intent to file a citizen's suit against OHSWA.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

News Updates...ACAL News – Week of 15 December 2006
When I was a kid growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, every now and then, I would be given the wonderful opportunity to view nature in “real life”. Better known as National Geographic Specials, many may recall the theme song, indicating a special was about to begin – on prime time television. My parents were pretty strict about bedtime on a “school night”, but my brother and I were always allowed to stay up and watch a National Geographic Special.
This childhood memory was prompted a few days ago when I watched the 2005 film, “March of the Penguins” for the first time on DVD. National Geographic has come a long way in 35 years – from occasional television specials to feature films.
After watching the movie, I couldn’t talk about it until the following day. For one of the few times in my life, I was at a loss for words. What I saw, but more importantly what I learned, brought tears to my eyes and put a lump in my throat. After reflecting on the movie for several days, I now feel I can begin to express how “March of the Penguins” affected me personally.
All my life, I have believed that penguins were silly, clumsy, rather stupid birds that could walk and swim. They have been the subject of cartoon characters and stuffed animals, and even comedians have imitated how they walk. But “March of the Penguins” has changed all that.
Penguins have existed for thousands and thousands of years, under the worst possible environmental conditions. You think it’s cold in the North Country? At times, penguins have to endure temperatures of 80 degrees below zero with wind gusts as high as 100 miles per hour. But I don’t want to give the movie away, if you haven’t seen it.
What I do what to share is that I personally have a new respect for a creature I thought was stupid and silly. Not because they can endure long periods of extreme cold without food, but because as a species, penguins are loving and passionate, and rely on one another for survival. They have a strong sense of family and a stronger sense of community. What a wonderful lesson for humans!
As another year will soon come to an end, we are given the promise of a new one. Many people will make “resolutions” as an attempt to better their lives. I prefer to make “commitments” because I feel they better reflect responsibility, devotion, and dedication to self.
Although I care very much about the environment and my actions reflect this belief, I would like to make a commitment to do more in 2007. Long-time ACAL member Jim Pitcher recycles and re-recycles paper more than anyone I know. Anything written on paper you receive from Jim usually has something else written on the back. I admire Jim’s conservation practices and plan to recycle more paper next year.
In my county, folks bring more recyclables to the local transfer sites than garbage. The county sells these recyclables, for a profit, to companies who use the products. Each transfer site consists of a number of employees who help residents unload their vehicles and sort recyclables. These county employees are not only helpful, but provide an incredible service for local residents. I plan to make a commitment to frequently acknowledge these individuals who make recycling a pleasant experience: a plate of Christmas cookies, a grateful letter to the editor of the local paper, and other forms of acknowledgement and gratitude throughout the year.
In addition, I will continue to engage in practices I have done for years like refusing to litter, picking up garbage and debris along roadways and in public places like parks and hiking trails, and conserving water.
A conscious effort from one individual to care for the environment can make a difference in the community. A conscious effort from many people can change the world.
