| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

News Updates...ACAL News – Week of 8 December 2006
Unexpected events are usually a surprise, but very much a part of life. The late John Lennon captured the sentiment perfectly by stating, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”
Within 12 hour’s time, we had two cars break down this week, both needing to be towed. One vehicle needed only minor repairs, while the other required a new transmission. Good news and bad news.
It’s difficult to imagine how the unwanted Ava Landfill can offer the community good news, when the bad news is so obvious. However, I personally believe if you look at a situation long enough with an open mind, it is possible to see good even with the bad.
Since Adirondack Communities Advisory League (ACAL) was created in 1993 to preserve and protect the environment, area residents have helped ACAL raise over a half million dollars in fundraising from bake sales, dinners, ice cream socials, auctions, raffles and donations. When I share this information with other environmental organizations, media, and professionals, the response is always the same: people are totally impressed with the depth of commitment found in such as small community.
Every dinner sponsored by ACAL requires members to call volunteers on the pie list, consisting of local residents who generously and lovingly bake homemade desserts for ACAL. In over thirteen years, that’s a lot of pies! Yet volunteers gladly donate not only their time, but share their “gifts” with the community; an outward sign of goodness.
I have done a lot of research on landfills being sited in small rural communities throughout the country. In nearly every case I have read, the majority of town boards agreed to accept a landfill into their community and took whatever the landfill builder had to offer. These communities frequently regretted their decisions, especially when proposals were later submitted to expand a landfill facility or extend its life expectancy. For when a town agrees to accept “something” for a landfill, it forfeits rights to protect itself.
The Town of Ava is not one of the many towns willing to accept the pollution and liability associated with a landfill. Instead, the Town Board has adamantly opposed the siting and construction of the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (OHSWA) landfill for over thirteen years. In a day and age when many people insist on “being shown the money,” the Ava Town Board has rejected being paid off and, as a result, retains their rights to openly oppose the landfill.
I wonder how many residents realize the depth of character and commitment on the part of the Ava Town Board; a small group of individuals who represent one of the smallest and economically disadvantaged towns in New York State? To stand against a powerful public authority takes courage and perseverance. To care for its citizens requires compassion.
Mahatma Gandi said, “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” The Ava Town Board is a perfect example of positive change.
All citizens can affect their communities in a positive way. To do so, they must first free themselves from the burden of indifference and constant acceptance of the status quo. Second, they must choose to become involved. This can be done in a number of ways: shop locally, volunteer at a local church, become a member of an organization, attend town and village board meetings, participate in local fund raising events, care for the environment by reducing waste, reusing products, recycling at a local redemption center, and by refusing to litter. Working together, citizens can make a positive difference in their communities by being “good news” for one another.
On behalf of ACAL, I wish to thank all citizens who have generously supported our mission for over thirteen years. As we begin another year of service, ACAL is confident that our work will continue to make a difference in the Northern Oneida and Southern Lewis County Region of the Tug Hill Plateau.
