| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

News Updates...ACAL News – Week of September 8, 2006
Two years ago, town and village officials representing the Towns of Ava, Boonville, Lewis and Village of Boonville met to discuss the creation of a joint board resolution against the Ava Landfill. This meeting occurred shortly after the beaver dam incident on the landfill site in August 2004, which sent millions of gallons of sediment-filled water and debris into the trout spawning stream of Moose Creek.
The Joint Resolution was drafted by Ava councilman Frank Reid and was presented to town and village representatives at a special meeting in the fall of 2004 for comment and discussion. Following the special meeting, each board then made a decision whether or not to pass the resolution.
The Towns of Ava, Boonville and Lewis all passed the Joint Resolution against the Ava Landfill. During a monthly board meeting in November 2005, after being questioned by an ACAL member, the mayor admitted publicly that the Village of Boonville voted not to pass the Joint Resolution a year earlier. What was most upsetting to ACAL and area residents was that the Village of Boonville led people to believe they had passed the resolution, when it fact, they had not.
Nearly two years have passed, and I am still befuddled as to why the Village of Boonville refused to support its sister townships by not passing the Joint Resolution.
Over the past thirteen years, the towns of Ava and Lewis have been adamant in their continuing opposition to the Ava Landfill. However, representatives from the town and village of Boonville have attended meetings with the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority to discuss possible landfill related compensation, while the Town of Ava continues to oppose a landfill being forced into their town.
I invite area citizens and town and village of Boonville officials to reread the following Joint Resolution and ask the questions, “How important is the environment to me?” and
“What can I do to support the Town of Ava?”
JOINT RESOLUTION, TOWNS OF AVA, BOONVILLE, LEWIS AND VILLAGE OF BOONVILLE
Whereas the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority is proceeding with actions to construct a landfill in the Town of Ava and
Whereas the necessity of a landfill in unsubstantiated by virtue of ample and most cost effective alternatives for waste disposal that exist now and well into the future and
Whereas the landfill will destroy pristine environment that can never be recovered and
Whereas the evident financial risk associated with the landfill will eventually be borne by the already heavily burdened people of Oneida and Herkimer counties and
Whereas the safety of all people who travel the roads, as well as the health of all whose water supply has its origin in and about the landfill area, will be placed in jeopardy and
Whereas the planned construction of a landfill abutting the Veterans’ Memorial Forest and its use as a buffer zone is an affront to the men and women who served, are serving and will serve our country,
Therefore, in recognition of their responsibility to serve the safety and well-bring of current and future generations of their respective municipalities, the duly elected representatives of the people in the Towns of Ava, Boonville, Lewis, and the Village of Boonville, by joint resolution, do hereby affirm their continued opposition to the construction of a landfill in the Town of Ava and insist that irreparable damage already being caused to the environment at the proposed site of the Authority’s landfill not proceed any further and that the Authority muster the courage required to abandon its landfill plan.
