| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

The Emperor’s New Clothes was written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837. Although published nearly one hundred seventy years ago, the story’s meaning is still relevant today.
Here is a brief synopsis of The Emperor’s New Clothes, in case you have forgotten how it goes …
Many years ago, there lived a rather conceited emperor who found an enormous amount of pleasure wearing expensive clothing, while parading himself around town for all to see. Having discovered the arrogance of the emperor, two “swindlers” decided they would not only take his money, but they would make a fool of him as well.
Based on the false premise that the “swindlers” had expensive cloth so fine that it was only visible to men clever enough to see it, they convinced the emperor to hand over large sums of money in exchange for a new suit of clothes made from the “fine cloth.”
Despite the fact that many upstanding citizens could not see the new clothing, they pretended to see it, for fear of being labeled “unpardonably stupid” or “unfit for office.”
The ridiculous farce continued until, finally, a young child spoke up and said the emperor wasn’t wearing anything at all.
Out of the mouths of babes … one small voice in a sea of foolishness …
Sometimes it takes only one person or one organization to create an awareness of an issue most folks would rather not discuss – like the Ava Landfill.
Contrary to the diligent efforts of many wonderful and hard working people for nearly thirteen years, Ava Landfill construction could not be stopped. Federal, State and local politicians backed away and made it quite clear, by their lack of interest and action, that the landfill was a “hands off” issue.
Appointing a State Authority to construct a landfill means only one thing: the State wants it and needs it. Can the permit be sold or leased to another company in the future, therefore opening the landfill to garbage from all over the State, including New York City? Yes, it can. Can Ava do anything to protect itself from this pending environmental disaster? Yes, it can.
Despite the fact that authorities supersede town law and the landfill was forced into the Town of Ava, the town board has fought this shameful injustice from the very beginning. As a result, they hold a powerful card. The card that says, “We refuse to become a willing host community to a landfill we never wanted or asked for.”
Senator Clinton understands what that means. Several years ago, she stated quite clearly that garbage should never be forced into communities that don’t want it. Yet, has she taken the time to visit the Ava Landfill site? Is she aware that Moose Creek has been polluted by the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (OHSWA) for over a year? Why the “hands off” attitude? Don’t the citizens of Ava have a right to protect their town from a 1,000-acre landfill they don’t want?
As acres of wetlands continue to be destroyed and Moose Creek continues to be polluted (even today, as I write this), local citizens know that an enormous landfill is being built in the small rural town of Ava, just miles from three Adirondack Central schools.
In addition, an OHSWA board member, who is NOT a Boonville resident, has been attending local town meetings. Why? I have no idea. This OHSWA board member is “clothed” in what appears to be the “attire” of an environmentalist, but I am compelled to say, “Environmentalists don’t sit on boards that build landfills!”
It’s bad enough OHSWA has forced a landfill into what was once a pristine, undeveloped area (with the State’s money and power behind them), but how dare they pretend to be the good guys.
We are not fools! The emperor isn’t wearing any clothes!
