| 06/21/10 | NYSDEC New Solid Waste Plan Draft | Entitled Beyond Solid Waste - A Sustainable Materials Management Strategy for New York, the NYSDEC has drafted a 480-page plan to reduce solid waste through increases in reuse, recycling and composting in local communities. Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."

News Updates...ACAL NEWS – Week of April 28, 2006
This week I received a copy of an interesting article from an ACAL member via email. The article entitled, Tug Hill, A Threatened Paradise was written by local author and Turin resident Emily Williams in 1991.
Ms. Williams began her description of the Tug Hill Plateau with this:
Snow is the biggest crop produced in this sparsely settled region of New York.
Also clean air, sparking streams and a relaxed life style.
Just ask friends, family members or neighbors why they live in this area and the response will likely be quite similar. There is something special about the Tug Hill region, but you don’t need me to tell you that.
What I can share with you is some of the information Ms. Williams wrote about in her article. She was deeply concerned that the Tug Hill Plateau was in danger of losing its uniqueness and becoming a dumping ground for future waste disposal. The relevancy of her article, although written in 1991, is timely in 2006.
Describing a suburban gathering of professional individuals, perhaps involved in politics, Ms. Williams quotes a conversation,
“I’ve been studying the map of upstate New York. Above the Thruway there’s a space between Lake Ontario and the Adirondacks that’s quite empty. No main highways. There can’t be many people living there. Yet it’s fairly close to Interstate 81. It’s the idea place for a landfill. It’s called Tug Hill Plateau.”
Is there a coincidence that a State appointed authority is being allowed to build a 1000-acre landfill in the small rural town of Ava?
The article goes on to describe the “remarkable depths” contained within the Tug Hill region – the gulfs (like the 350-foot deep Whetstone Gulf) and abundant streams and creeks that flow through the area. The very streams and creeks that ACAL is trying to preserve and protect from being polluted by a landfill that the town of Ava refuses to accept into their small, quiet community.
And wildlife. And fishing. “Tug Hill has good fishing today, particularly on the eastern side where brook trout are found in the waters of Fish Creek and its tributaries.”
My parents and grandparents, uncles and cousins have fished the Sugar and Black Rivers, and all the fresh water stream in between. Anyone who fishes in this region knows where to catch the nicest brook, brown and rainbow trout.
Are these streams and rivers in danger of becoming forever polluted? Yes they are. But ACAL is working hard to make sure the way of life we have enjoyed for generations remains intact.
The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority has been a thorn in our proverbial side for too long. They forced their way into our communities by originally siting a landfill in wetlands and farmland, and in the middle of a living Veterans Memorial Forest. How they were ever allowed to do what they have done in the past 14 years makes no sense to anyone I know. They have no regard for the water or wildlife or way of life we cherish. And they lie - over and over again, without consequence or accountability. I could site examples that would fill the entire contents of the Boonville Herald.
How do we stop a State appointed authority from violating the Clean Water Act? We force them to stop polluting the trout spawning stream of Moose Creek. In addition, we also hold the DEC accountable for allowing this authority to pollute the waters of New York.
According to a legal source, the DEC’s February 2006 Consent Order is “blatantly illegal” and “blesses future pollution” by giving the authority permission to discharge sediment into Moose Creek. The DEC may be a State government agency, but they have become an environmental hazard to the citizens of New York State. They must be held accountable for allowing pollution in the Tug Hill Plateau.
We owe it ourselves, our children, their children, and generations to come. We owe it to the people of New York State. And we owe it to Emily Williams, who cared so deeply for the Tug Hill region, she wrote about it fifteen years ago.
By the way, did I mention Ms. Williams’ article was published in The Conservationist – the official magazine of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC)?
