Further, the plan calls for a reduction in packaging by manufacturers and a reduction in climate and environmental impacts caused by transporting waste and harmful emissions coming from incinerators and landfills.

| 04/20/06 | Letter to Ava from OHSWA | Lengthy letter from OHSWA Executive Director Hans Arnold to the Ava Town Board regarding a "host community benefit package". The Ava board refuses to negotiate with OHSWA for a 1000+/- acre landfill that is being forced into their rural community.

| 03/20/06 | Ava Complaint to DEC | The Town of Ava sends a letter to Region 6 DEC requesting their Consent Order be rescinded. The town board and the citizens they represent are genuinely concerned about the environment in Ava. They are extremely distressed that OHSWA and Rifenburg have been given permission by the DEC to allow excessive sediment to enter Moose Creek - "a provision that is contrary to the basic mission of the DEC."
|
| 02/13/06 | NYSDEC Consent Order | NYSDEC is giving OHSWA permission to discharge excessive sediment and water into nearby Moose Creek, a federally protected trout spawning stream in Ava, NY.

ACAL will be sponsoring a Community Letter Writing Campaign on Thursday, September 2, 2004 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm at Adirondack High School. It is extremely important for citizens to make a concentrated effort to contact State and County officials and alert them to the injustice that has been occuring in Northern Oneida and Southern Lewis counties for over 10 years with regard to the proposed dump in Ava. Hand written letters can be effective if they are written by large numbers of people. All you need to do is mark Sept. 2 on your calendars and go to the high school between 4:00 and 8:00 pm. You are welcome to bring your own stationary or you may use the materials that will be supplied. ACAL members will be available to assist individuals who may need some letter writing support. School aged children and youth are also welcome to write letters.
NO! and NO DUMP! signs continue to go up all over the region. Visitors from out of town attending the Woodsmen's Field Days asked ACAL members repeatedly about the dump because of the signs displayed along Route 12 and throughout the Village of Boonville. All were in support of ACAL's efforts to end the dump controversy. Visitors commented on how beautiful this area is and how they would never want that to change. Most stood open-mouthed at how long this fight has been going on. Some planned to contact friends and relatives involved in government.
The beaver dam incident that occured on the proposed dump site between 6:00 and 7:00 pm on the night of August 17 (after construction crews left the site and before the Oneida County Sheriff's patrol came on duty) is still under investigation. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) representatives have discovered proof that live beaver were living in the pond prior to the washout which destroyed a 15 acre beaver pond, sending excessive amounts of water, mud contaminate and debris in the Moose Creek, and Sugar and Black River, killing many brook trout native to these water sources. Wildlife experts are confident a dam would not wash away on its own unless during spring thaw or if the dam had been abandoned for a number of years. Neither senario fits this situation despite lame efforts on the part of Hans Arnold, insisting the destroyed beaver dam was a "natural occurence." As a weather observer for the National Weather Service, less than one inch of rain had fallen during the days prior to the beaver dam breaking free; certainly not enough rain to cause the destruction.
The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (OHSWA) continues to violate the DEC permit andother local laws. It is time OHSWA is held accountable for the destruction and havoc they have raised in this community. The time has come for a thorough investigation of this appointed Authority who thinks they are exempt from state, county and local laws. We must urge our elected officials to begin an investigation, which many believe, will expose OHSWA for what it is: a self-serving entity designed to fill its pockets with taxpayers' dollars!
